Full disclosure…we were kinda ready to call it quits on our traditional St. Paddy’s Day party this year. After eight parties in the books we were starting to wonder if this celebration had outgrown Hillside Lane. In the end, I am a sucker for tradition and couldn’t imagine throwing in the towel on such a much-loved staple of our year. And thank goodness we didn’t…Irish eyes were smiling this past Saturday when the temps reached into the 60s and we were able to get outside and celebrate the Irish in style. The 9th St. Paddy’s Day Party was one for the books and one of my favorites in all the years. I already can’t wait until next year!
So many things have changed since that first party on Fletcher Ave. in Chicago. While we once started this day by tapping the keg of green beer at 9:30am (we had to set our alarm to get up in time), we now begin with tall cups of coffee, visits from leprechauns and Irish donuts for the kids.
Andris reminded me that the first year of the party we ran out of the keg in about an hour and a half. This year we skipped the keg and opted for bottled beer and wine, since we no longer make it through an entire keg….I think that is a sign that we are getting old
And while the kids may now outnumber the adults at this party, the beer choices have been upgraded and the party begins to wind down in time for bedtimes – it is still filled with all the important things…Irish tunes, Big 10 basketball, lots of food and the best of friends.
